Somatic Movement

To heal trauma, we must move our bodies!

Somatic movement is strategic movement to allow you to become more aware of what you are experiencing and feeling in your body.

The majority of people are completely detached emotionally from their physical bodies.  When we experience trauma, our nervous system kicks into gear and does what it needs to do to keep us safe in that moment.  Often times this means us disconnecting to whatever our physical body is experiencing during that moment.  The problem with this is that we often stay disconnected, which allows for the trauma to stay trapped in our physical body.  People might complain that they have aches and pains, but what their body is really trying to communicate to them is that I have something trapped and it wants to be released.

Somatic movement is allowing you to become more aware of what your body is communicating to you and to slowly be able to come back into your body safely.  This can start with simple mindfulness and awareness of what your body is really feeling.  Practice taking in deep breathes, closing down your eyes and doing a body scan.  Start at the top of your head and feel into the sensations in your eyes, down to your cheeks and mouth.  Then travel down to your shoulders, are you holding any tension here that maybe you didn’t even realize you were holding.  Continue to relax your body as you move down your mid back, down to your hips.  Most people hold significant trauma in their hips, do they feel tight or uncomfortable?  Then travel down your legs into your feet.  Visualize yourself connecting to mother earth with roots coming out of your feet and connecting to that grounding energy.  This is a simple technique that allows you to start to become more aware of what you are experiencing in your physical body.

How does it help me?

The body always keeps the score.  We are not releasing our trauma unless we are moving our bodies.  We are complex human beings and what I have discovered from over a decade of working with people that have extensive trauma histories is that we can’t just talk about it, talking about it actually makes it worse.  We must come at trauma utilizing a mind, body, soul perspective for long lasting results.  We first learn to understand our trauma and what it taught you.  When we choose to look at it in a different perspective, it starts to give us our power back.  It’s important to understand what your beliefs are around your own ability to heal yourself.  If you don’t believe you can get better, then you won’t get better.  Then it’s time to start to reconnect your relationship with your physical body.  You will learn strategic techniques to help you release what you have been holding onto to start the healing process.  This work is so incredibly powerful and will change your life if you allow it to.

This experience includes an initial consult where I will get to know and understand you, your story and your individualized needs.  From here I curate an individualized somatic body movement that I will teach you to practice over the course of 40 days.  We will meet virtually each week to discuss any barriers, progress or questions that may arise.  This experience is designed to blast through your blocks in a rapid way for accelerated healing and transformation!

"Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become experts at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves." (p.97)" -Bessel A. van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma
